Melrose pupils are masters of the Euroquiz

Youngster from Melrose Primary School have proven themselves unbeatable in the art of the quiz, having won the Borders heat of a national competition for the fourth year in a row last week.

The pupils defeated 14 other Borders schools at the contest, held at the Scottish Borders Council’s headquarters, to make the national finals of the Euroquiz competition.

The annual event is organised by the Scottish European Educational Trust and is open to all primary six pupils from across Scotland who are questioned on a wide range of subjects including history, geography, sport, culture, languages and the European Union.

The Melrose pupils faced stiff competition from St Boswells Primary School in the final round before triumphing for yet another year. They will now go on to compete against other local authority teams at the Euroquiz championship in the Scottish Parliament next month.

Carol Hamilton, the council’s executive member for children and young people said: “This hugely popular and well contested annual event remains a tremendous example of the way in which children from all over the Borders can come together to experience learning in a fun and good-spirited way.

“The knowledge displayed by all these young people was considerable and they are each to be commended, both for their individual and team contributions, and for the well-mannered way in which the competition was fought.

“Many congratulations to Melrose on yet another well-deserved win and to St Boswells for their valiant effort. We wish Melrose all the very best as they go forward to the national finals where I have no doubt they will represent the Borders to the best of their ability.

“Our collective thanks go to everyone involved in the event. From councillor Euan Jardine, who admirably stepped up to the role of compere, to the admin staff, teachers and parents this really is a team effort and we are hugely grateful for all their hard work that makes this event possible.”
