Lecture frisson

I was surprised when I read Erica Hume Niven’s account of a lecture about the life of mountaineer George Mallory (Southern 08/03/2012). When the lecturer got to “the subject of homosexuality”, Erica wrote: “I could feel the tension behind me in the dimly lit room.”

I find it hard to believe that a mention of homosexuality from 1910 could possibly cause tension in Galashiels in the 21st century. Perhaps Ms Niven detected homoerotic excitement?
