LATEST: Hawico announces 15 jobs to go

A Hawick textiles firm says it needs to make redundancies if it is to remain competitive.

Hawico (formerly Hawick Cashmere) is making 15 people redundant and today (Monday) the company issued a statement: “To ensure Hawico retains a competitive manufacturing cost base, the company have made significant investments in the very latest knitting technology over some time. “This has meant that there is a current need to reduce the number of employees in the business. The directors of Hawico have today announced that they have commenced consultation with employees regarding a potential redundancy situation. It is envisaged that approximately 15 people could be affected.”

Local MSP John Lamont says Hawico management has assured him these job losses have been caused by technological advances of machinery rather than any underlying problems with their business model.

Mr Lamont added: “While any further job losses in Hawick are clearly concerning, the company remains in a very strong position.”
