Talks are under way that could see a community sports hub created in Langholm, writes Bob Burgess.

It’s being spearheaded by Dumfries and Galloway Council and exploratory meetings have already been held with the town’s bowling rugby, cricket, boxing, running and Thai boxing clubs.

And the council says the response from the clubs has been encouraging.

Councillor Ronnie Ogilvie said: “A community sports hub in Langholm is a real opportunity to develop a partnership where clubs are working in cohesion.

“Through an integrated approach with genuine community engagement and leadership, club sport will be at the heart of local decision making.”

Community sports hub are being encouraged and developed by Sportscotland as part of the legacy of the successful Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.

Discussions at the meetings between clubs and the council looked at funding, a co-ordinated approach to club timetables to provide a wider choice for young people, training for coaches and volunteers and how to get more volunteers involved.

The next meeting is an open one on October 9 at 6pm in the clubrooms of Langholm Cricket Club.
