Brian Gray revealed his scheme to The Southern this week, seeking readers’ help to locate a piece of suitable ground in the region.

Mr Gray, who pointed out his new venture is unrelated to his role as a director of the Edinburgh club, said the training track would further the development of young would-be riders from all over Scotland and further afield.

Edinburgh Monarchs compete in British Speedway’s Premier League, racing on Friday nights throughout the season at their home track, Scotwaste Arena, in West Lothian.

“Ideally, I’d be looking at ground sharing with another sport, probably rugby or football,” Mr Gray told us.

“ As long as there is sufficient room around the main playing area to construct a track. This is in the shape of a traditional running oval, anywhere between 250 and 400 metres long.

“Failing that, perhaps a farmer or landowner may have a bit of land about six or seven acres in size to start from scratch. Redundant farmland or waste ground is ideal.”

Mr Gray recently failed to clinch a groundshare deal with Hawick Royal Albert football club, which he says was happy to be involved in his project, but unfortunately the space available was several metres too narrow.
