Kelso's Rebecca donates her long locks for charity

But this month, the 10-year-old Broomlands Primary pupil decided her long locks would be better used on someone else’s head, after mum Nicola suggested a shorter style might be more convenient when it came to drying and styling.

“I suggested having it cut shorter, much to Rebecca’s dismay,” explained Nicola this week. “However, when Rebecca found out online that she could donate her hair to help other children, she was very keen to have the chop.”

Toni Shearer of Hobz Salon, in Kelso, kindly donated her time to lop off Rebecca’s 10-inch plaits which were then sent to The Little Princess Trust, a charity providing free real hair wigs to youngsters who have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment.

If a suitable donated-hair wig cannot be sourced for a child then the trust has to purchase one costing around £350. Rebecca and her mum have set up a www.justgiving.com page online to help cover these costs. The total amount raised stands at £597, not far off their target of £700, which would pay for two wigs. And Rebecca told us: “I’m really glad I did it and hope someone will benefit from my hair donation.
