John, who founded Glenrath Farms with his wife Cathy, received the award in recognition of his “outstanding contributions to Scottish agriculture and the rural economy.”

John received his award during the annual SRUC Graduation ceremony in Bute Hall, at the University of Glasgow. He took the chance to speak to this year’s graduates of how lucky he felt to receive the award, and of agriculture’s future.

He said: “I would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank you and the SRUC for conferring this prestigious honour to me in recognition of the success of our family, our company and above all our outstanding team of 240 employees on our farms. People are the hub of success in any walk of life.

“I would like to congratulate all you young people that have received your degrees today. Look for opportunities – they will come, grasp them and make a commitment.

“We have heard a lot of doom and gloom in UK agriculture. However, challenges mean opportunities, as sure as eggs is eggs opportunities will arise. Do not believe that UK farming is in the doldrums. With your training I am sure that there will be marvellous opportunities in agriculture.”

Having started his career on a hill farm in Argyllshire at fifteen, John and Cathy bought Glenrath Farm and have since turned it into one of the largest and most successful agribusiness companies in the UK. Today the business produces, packs and sells almost 1.5 million eggs per day.
