Clothing chain M&Co’s Kelso store will close its doors for the final time on Tuesday after over 30 years of trading in the town’s Horsemarket.

An M&Co spokeswoman said: “I can confirm that the M&Co Kelso store is due to close on Tuesday, September 4, and staff have been advised.

“M&Co are always very sad to close a store where they have traded for so many years.

“M&Co will from now on serve its Kelso Customers on the website, where they can shop at all departments with ease, and at the M&Co Hawick High Street store, which remains open.”

The Kelso store, next to newsagent WH Smith in the town centre, opened in 1986 and employed around six full and part-time staff of late.

The firm closed its Galashiels store in Channel Street back in January 2013.

M&Co is one of the largest privately-owned fashion retailers in the UK.

Originally known as Mackays but rebranded as M&Co in 2013, the chain was set up in the 1960s by the McGeoch family.

It grew from six stores in Glasgow to almost 300 nationwide and now employs more than 3,900 staff.

Last September, the retailer announced plans to open 12 to 15 shops a year until 2022.
