Jane, Dowager Duchess of Buccleuch

HER many friends and admirers in the Borders will be saddened to hear of the death of Jane, Dowager Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry.

She was 81.

Her Grace passed away peacefully with her family around her at a London hospital on Monday. She had recently suffered a stroke.

Jane McNeill, who hailed from the Western Isles, was a fashion model for the house of Norman Hartnell before marrying the 9th Duke of Buccleuch, then the Earl of Dalkeith, in 1953.

She had been widowed for over three years, spending much of her time at the family’s Borders home at Bowhill, near Selkirk.

A funeral service will be held in Holy Trinity Church, Melrose, at 2pm next Wednesday.
