In praise of public service

It seems a great pity that the two letters printed last week concerning public services during the recent severe weather both had a negative slant.

Surely we should be full of gratitude and appreciation for the public service workers who keep our essential services going – the care workers, paramedics, ambulance drivers, gritters and snow clearers, teachers, Red Cross and many others, and, yes, the Munro’s bus drivers for whom I hold great respect.

From the comfort of homes in the towns, it is difficult perhaps to appreciate how harsh and treacherous conditions in some of the more remote areas of the region can be.
