Convenor of Scottish Borders Council, Alasdair Hutton, right, has sent a message of condolence to the Mayor of Christchurch, Bob Parker.

“On behalf of the people of the Scottish Borders, who share much in common with the South Island of New Zealand, I want to send our profound sympathies on the tragedy which has befallen the city and most sincere condolences to the relatives of all those who have lost their lives.

“It is a tragic reminder of the respect which we should always show to the power of the natural world.

“If we in the Scottish Borders can offer any help please do not hesitate to call on us.”
