The founder of Scottish Heart at Risk Testing (HART) told The Southern: “I’m chuffed to bits and a bit shocked”.

Wilma, of Hallidays Park, set up Scottish HART in 1997 following the sudden death of her son, Cameron, who had cardiomyopathy, in 1991.

The charity raises money to screen young people, families at risk and competitive sports people for heart disorders and is involved in installing defibrillators in public places and running training programmes for them.

Wilma said: “I appreciate this award very much and accept it in the knowledge that a whole lot of people have helped me and Scottish HART over the years.”

In Yetholm, Tom Tokely, 83, was awarded the BEM for voluntary service to the community.

He said: “I’m quite excited, I feel quite proud. I have always been interested in the village and I felt I had to do things for the village.”

The former joiner and undertaker joined the community council when it was created in 1973, chairing the council and village festival committee for 14 years.

Tom started the Romany Ramblers walking group about 12 years ago and founded the village’s walking weekend eight years ago. A runner and a footballer for Yetholm in his younger days, he then refereed for more than 20 years, including the South of Scotland Amateur Cup final twice. A church elder for 45 years and Borders Shepherds Show committee member for more than 50 years, keen gardener Tom and his wife of 58 years, Ruth, plan to celebrate with daughters Dianne and Yvonne this week.

Police Scotland’s Commander for Lothians and Borders Division, Chief Superintendent Jeanette McDiarmid, a police officer for 32 years, was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal. The division’s former head of special branch and married mother-of-two of Peebles, said: “I’m delighted and honoured to receive this award.”
