The riders plan to stop off at Yarrow’s Gordon Arms on Monday, May 9, at 11.30am for a drinks break on their way to Paris.

Their 994-mile trip is linked to the Duchenne Dash, a 24-hour ride from London to Paris.

However, the Scots cyclists decided to make their challenge even tougher by starting their journey at the north-east tip of the Scottish Highlands today and join the rest of the riders in the English capital ready to head on to France.

Proceeds will go to the Duchenne Children’s Trust, a charity funding research into, and treatment of, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a disease affecting youngsters.

“It’s a huge challenge for all of us, but the cause is very dear to our hearts as our friend Ali Robertson’s son Felix is affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and Ali has been the prime mover behind the charity cycle,” said Gordon. “My old Selkirk and Scotland team-mate Iwan Tukalo will be accompanying us for a section of the Scottish route, as will fellow Scotland players Roger Baird and Rob Wainwright.

“Former Heriots and Scotland player Andy Macdonald, whose wife Judith is from Lindean, is one of the core team of 10 riders covering all 1,600km of the route.

“Once south of the border we will be joined by such rugby luminaries as Roger Uttley and Will Carling, and the support the event has attracted is really heartening.”
