FLOODS UPDATE: Rest centres set up in Hawick and Jedburgh
Significant heavy rain has affected the south east of the Borders this morning.
This morning, a spokes person for Scottish Borders Council told us: “Due to concerns for properties in Hawick and Jedburgh, two rest centres have been established in Teviotdale Leisure Centre in Hawick and Jedburgh Town Hall, with residents in affected areas being advised to evacuate.

Hide Ad“In Hawick, residents in Commercial Road, Mansfield Road, Duke Street, Teviot Crescent, Noble Place, Buccleuch Street, Sandbed and the Haugh advised to move their vehicles and take precautions to protect their properties.
“Across the Borders, roads are affected, with Police Scotland advising people in the Hawick and Jedburgh areas not to travel. An update on routes which are closed is available at Scottish Borders Council’s website here.
“The rain is easing and is due to pass by noon. River levels will continue to rise through the morning. Check SEPA’s website and Met Office’s website for more details.
The council has opened the emergency planning bunker to deal with the situation. Further updates will be provided.

Hide AdFirefighters have been called out to rescue a driver from a bus which became trapped in floodwater near Hawick.
The bus became stuck at Hassendean station on the B6405 after more heavy overnight rain.
Numerous routes across the south of Scotland have been badly affected by flooding.
Motorists in Hawick and Jedburgh and surrounding areas have been advised by police not to drive at all.

Hide AdHeavy rain during last night and this morning has resulted in flooding and traffic chaos across the region once again.
25.6mm of rain has fallen in the last 48 hours, meaning flooding is possible along the border and in north Northumberland.
Most of the flooding appears to be in the Denholm, Bonchester Bridge, Jedburgh, St Boswells and Hawick areas, with several roads closed.
The Hawick Flood Group’s Facebook page states that the A7 is closed south of Hawick, the A698 between Hawick and Denholm has been closed, and the Boosie Burn at the top of Marmion Road in Hawick is overflowing.
Denholm is also badly affected.

Overhall Road/Martin’s Bridge, Hawick
B709 between Ramseycleuch Bridge and Angecroft Caravan Park in the Ettrick Valley

Hide AdA698 between Denholm and Hawick (large tailbacks also on the A699 westbound waiting to join the A68)
Meanwhile, the A68 between Newton St Boswells and St Boswells is passable with extreme care, say police.
Flooding has also left standing water on the A1 between Haddington and Dunbar.
Motorists are being urged not to ignore warning or diversion signs in the current difficult conditions.

Hide AdThe Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued a flood alert for the Scottish Borders.
The agency has also issued a flood warning for the following areas:
Camptown to Jedburgh
Hawick (there have been reports of a landslide at Teviothead on the A7 and serious flooding on Newcastleton Road)
Hawick to Monteviot
Monteviot to Kelso
Tweedbank to Floors
