Residents and staff at a Borders care home have been hit with the news that it may close as early as September due to financial problems.

Eildon Housing has announced that it is consulting on the proposed closure of Craw Wood in Tweedbank, which would affect 17 residents and 30 staff.

A statement from the housing association, which established the specialist dementia unit in 1996, blamed the planned closure on a lack of funding and increased costs.

Nile Istephan, Eildon’s chief executive, said: “The current funding environment for such services has meant that we have been trying to provide even higher standards of care, with diminishing financial resources.

“It is Eildon’s view that after several years operating with a deficit, the service at Craw Wood is not sustainable without the risk of a reduction in the quality of care. This is something which the association refuses to do.”

Mr Istephan added: “We very much regret that we have to make this announcement and will work closely with the families of those affected and our staff as we move through this process.”

He said the interests of residents “remains paramount in this difficult time”.

Following the announcement, a council spokesperson said: “We understand that this decision will cause some anxiety for all concerned. “We would like to assure residents and relatives that we have a detailed, tested procedure to follow in circumstances such as these.

“The residents and their families remain our chief concern and, at this time, our priority is to find suitable alternative placements for all residents so that they continue to be well supported.

“A team is currently being set up to undertake reviews for all who live at Craw Wood.”

The spokesperson added: “We will continue to work closely with Eildon Housing Association over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition for all residents and their relatives.”

Eildon has said that the funding issues affecting Craw Wood do not affect its other services.
