Family grateful for Selkirk fire alert

I live at 1 South Bridge Street in Selkirk and as you will know there was a devastating fire last Thursday.

We were fast asleep in bed (2.40am) and if it was not for the two men delivering papers to the post office over the road it would have been another 20 minutes before the firefighters were here and who knows what may have been the consequence of this.

So we would like to thank Bill Scott who works for SGM Distribution in Newtown St Boswells and his friend who was with him at the time. They frantically battered at our door until we woke and got out of the building.

We would also like to thank all the firefighters who worked endlessly to stop the fire from taking our house too. I stood outside and watched the smoke pouring through our roof and was convinced that we were losing our home.

It was 5pm before we were allowed back into the house and to our utmost amazement were only faced with smoke damage in the attic.
