Extra sandbags deployed as Lindean floods

Selkirk flood defence scheme has been tested wby Storm Frank today.

The Scottish Government Protection Agency (SEPA) had issued a flood warning for particular areas around Selkirk, Yarrow and Lindean.

Emergency services and council teams are supporting residents affected by the flooding.

It comes as a result of heavy rainfall swept in by Storm Frank, causing river levels to rise.

Numerous towns and villages across the Borders have endured strong winds and heavy rain all day, with river levels rising rapidly as a result.

In Lindean, the biggest danger is the conjunction of the River Ettrick and River Tweed below the village.

Earlier in the day, Selkirk councillor Gordon Edgar said emergency staff had been allocated to the A708 road leading to Yarrow and have been preparing for the probability of flooding from the Yarrow Water, another area which also had been issued with a severe flood warning.

In recent years the intelligent water management system installed at St Mary’s Loch and the Selkirk Flood Protection Scheme have been installed to reduce the risk of flooding in the area.
