THIS photograph, taken on Sunday and issued by the Campaign for Borders Rail, shows that work is well under way on the Borders Railway which is due to open in 2014.

The clearing of the trackbed is taking place at Millerhill in Midlothian, its route diverging off the turnback siding to the former Monktonhall colliery site where the new Shawfair station will be situated.

The ballast in the foreground is being stockpiled and the land covered by trees in the distance has now been sold jointly to Edinburgh and Midlothian Councils which last week lodged an outline planning application for a waste incinerator on the site.
