A Galashiels hotel manager has won a prestigious Carnegie Cameron Trust postgraduate scholarship worth £3,600.

Ryan Bruce, a duty manager at the Kingsknowes Hotel, secured one of only seven bursaries from the trust to fund all his Masters degree in International Politics and Security at Dundee University, where he graduated with a 2:1 LLB honours degree in Scots Law.

The 25-year-old, the first in his family to go to university, felt “extremely lucky”, and hopes “to pursue a career in international politics, perhaps with the United Nations or the diplomatic service before returning to the UK to pursue a career in British politics.

“My ultimate ambition is to one day become a MP and serve in the British cabinet.”

The trust, founded by the Scottish-American industrialist Andrew Carnegie in 1901, is open to ‘qualified and deserving, industrious and ambitious’ applicants of Scots birth or extraction, or residents in Scotland.
