Design firm’s butcher trophy is slice of style

A Clovenfords design company has created a unique trophy for one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in the UK food industry.

Caddon Design was charged with the task by Gordon Newlands, from Selkirk, who is manager of a guild representing over 100 of Britain’s best butchers.

The trophy is for the Smithfield Awards. The brief was to create something meat industry-related but also modern with reference to the Borders.

The event takes place in the Ironmongers Hall, in London, and Mr Newlands is delighted with the trophy. “I am sure this will be extremely well received by whoever is the supreme champion for 2015,” he said.

“We always have a celebrity presenting the awards and this year is no different- Monica Galetti from Masterchef The Professionals. I am delighted we will have someone so high profile in the industry as she is a champion of the independent trade and she will be presenting this magnificent trophy.”

The Smithfield Awards have been held for over 25 years with keen competition between the Q Guild members - 110 top butchers, all audited on hygiene and quality.Stretching from Aberdeen to Cornwall, they account for over £5million of meat sold weekly.

Mr Newlands added: “As general manager of this prestigious body of butchers, my main role is to help them gain customers via social media and marketing material; give advice on meat display and legislation. I visit them all regularly to ensure no stone is unturned for ‘meat perfection’.”
