The riverside facility, closed since February to allow for the opening of a diversion road while flood protection work is carried out, will be open again from Monday, July 25.

The site has been reconfigured during that five-month closure to enable those using it to get as much waste as possible into skips, thus cutting the number of short-term closures needed while skips are being emptied.

All the previous facilities offered by the recycling centre have been retained.

The closure was needed to allow Level Crossing Road to be extended through the old recycling centre site and a new culvert to be installed, also necessitating part of Dunsdale Road to be blocked off.

Scottish Borders Council’s executive member for environmental services, Hawick and Hermitage councillor David Paterson, said: “I am delighted Selkirk recycling centre has reopened after a lengthy closure period.

“We realise the closure has caused an inconvenience to people of Selkirk, but it was vital to ensure homes and businesses in the riverside area of the town were not adversely impacted on.

“Recycling centres play an important role in supporting the council’s kerbside waste and recycling collection services. For example, Selkirk recycling centre helped to divert 832 tonnes of waste from landfill in 2015, saving the council over £65,000 in landfill tax.

“I would encourage local people to come along and use the facility, even if you have not previously.

“The council has staff who will be happy to assist you. In addition, an information leaflet is available at the site and on the council’s website to give you further advice.”

The recycling centre is open from 10am to 6pm on weekdays and from 11am to 6pm at weekends.

Selkirk’s flood protection scheme is intended to help keep almost 600 properties safe should the Ettrick Water threaten to burst its banks again.

Main construction work on the £31.4m project is due to be completed by December.
