Defence lawyer Mat Patrick told Jedburgh Sheriff Court the pair had been in a brief relationship but it had come to an end.
He added that his client had been drinking alcohol when the couple came across each other and that led to a dispute.
After being of good behaviour during a six-month deferral of sentence, Brown, of Cheviot Road in Hawick, was admonished.
