The child had bleeds in all four chambers of her brain and required a stent, a court heard.

Brown, formerly of Eildon Road in Hawick, was found guilty after trial of endangering the child's life by a jury's majority verdict at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

Brown claimed he had accidentally dropped the child in the kitchen and said he had tried to catch her but failed.

However, medical experts gave evidence during his trial advising that the baby's severe injuries had not been caused by a fall.

Sheriff Peter Braid imposed a five-year prison sentence with a three-year extended sentence.

That sentence was backdated to February 3.

Brown was previously jailed in December 2018 for 18 months for severely assaulting his partner at the time while sitting in the back seat of a car by pulling at her scarf and tightening it around her neck, leaving her with severe injuries and endangering her life.
