a TEENAGER taking part in a national mountain bike tournament in the Borders has been left devastated by the theft of his £4,500 racer.

Police have appealed for information after the bike was taken from the downhill track campsite on Innerleithen’s Traquair Road.

The 15-year-old owner had secured his purple and white Rose-make cycle to the outside of a caravan using a steel lock.

He told police the bike was safe at 1am on Saturday but had disappeared by 8am.

A spokesman for Lothian and Police stated: “The young man had come to Innerleithen to participate in the Scottish Downhill Championships and is deeply upset that his bike has been stolen.

“We would urge any bicycle store staff to be on the lookout in case anyone tries to sell the bike.

“And we would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious within the downhill track car park or who has any information to come forward.”

Features of the missing bike include Fox downhill front forks and Fox rear suspension.
