Shoplifter fined £125 for drugged-up theft spree at Galashiels supermarket

A shoplifter has been fined £125 for stealing goods worth almost £200 from a Galashiels supermarket while drugged up.

Stephanie Black, 42, of Tea Street in Galashiels, pleaded guilty to stealing jewellery, stationery and phone accessories from Tesco’s Paton Street store on October 10.

Depute fiscal Fiona Hamilton told Selkirk Sheriff Court: “At around 10pm, police were alerted by staff about an intoxicated female staggering around in the clothing aisle.

“She was observed and eventually arrested.

“She was in possession of a small plastic bag which contained the items libelled in the charge.”

The value of the goods stolen by Black was given as £191 but they were all recovered, the court heard.

Defence lawyer Ed Hulme said his client had been struggling with drug addiction and had resorted to valium, adding: “She has no recollection of these events but accepts they happened.

“She is very ashamed and sorry for what happened.

“She is trying to work through her problems with the Borders Addiction Service.”
