Some weeks ago, a walking frame was vandalised outside a coffee shop in Melrose. The brake was damaged, the attachment for holding a walking stick unscrewed and a waterproof and pair of gloves stolen.
The owner, a 90-year-old woman, was extremely distressed and said it had destroyed her faith in human nature. It is difficult to imagine what could have provoked such a senseless and callous act in what we like to think is a civilised and caring community. It is a sad indictment that the old lady is no longer trusting enough to leave her new frame unattended and will be keeping it with her at all times.
