The incidents took place at Gordon Euman Double Glazing and Peter Tait Hygiene, which are neighbouring units, between 1am and 2.30am on Thursday, July 9.

Power tools worth around £3,000, which are branded with ‘Euman’, were stolen from the first business. Nothing was stolen from the second.

Owner Gordon Euman said: “They broke the office door to get in and it’s obvious they knew what they were looking for.

“They took six nailers, complete with boxes, and it looks like they wrapped them all up in a dust sheet to carry them away.

“There were other tools around, but it appears they couldn’t carry them all.

“I had to send the workers home yesterday, but we’re back up and running today.

“We were broken into once before, 10 years ago, when our van ended up in the Tweed.

“This time, thankfully, the place wasn’t as trashed up as it was then.”

Borders police are now urging anyone with information to come forward.

A police spokesperson said: “If you saw suspicious behaviour in the area, or know the whereabouts of the stolen tools, please contact us on 101 and quote incident number 0619 of 9 July, 2020.

“Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via the anonymous online form at crimestoppers-uk.org
