Peeblesshire farm body find – woman in court

A MURDER accused has been refused bail after making a second court appearance within 24 hours, writes Bob Burgess.

Twenty-two-year-old Eliska Novotna, whose address was given as Peebles, was remanded in custody when she appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday.

She’s charged with killing 39-year-old Arunus Ramaanauskas from Lithuania. His body was found in a steading at Easter Happrew Old Farm, near Stobo, on Saturday morning.

Police sealed off the site as forensic experts carried out an examination and detectives launched a death probe.

Novotna – who is also alleged to have attempted to defeat the ends of justice – made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody overnight for further examination.

During that time the sheriff considered an application from her lawyers that she be released on bail. But on Tuesday the sheriff rejected the bail application and ordered that she be kept in custody.

Novotna is due back in court for a committal hearing on Tuesday.
