Nineteen-year-old business management student Elliot Ramsay even turned up at his ex’s home, struck a window and threatened to harm himself.

He pleaded guilty at Selkirk Sheriff Court to a charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner in Kingsmeadows Road, Peebles, on July 6 and was fined £120 with a non-harassment order imposed for 12 months ordering him to stay away from his former partner.

Fiona Hamilton, prosecuting, said the pair had previously been in a relationship and on the day of the offence had been texting each other.

But when Ramsay discovered she was with another male he demanded that he come to her house, but the former partner said not to as her mum was there.

The fiscal said: “He sent a message and said was going to come and kill and the new partner.

“He was told not to come and again he sent a message saying he was going to kill the man.

“He turned up at the house and said he was going to kill him, referring to the new partner.”

Witnesses who heard the commotion called the police.

They also heard Ramsay saying he was going to kill himself.

Defence lawyer Ed Hulme said there had been “trust issues” on both sides in the relationship and the offence coincided with the pubs re-opening in July and his client had consumed alcohol.

He explained: “She had texted him and they had been messaging each other but he became upset when he realised she was with someone else and emotions got the better of him.

“What he said were empty threats. But he accepts they would have been alarmed when he turned up.”

In addition to the fine and non-harassment order, Ramsay was told to pay a £10 victim surcharge.
