Tweedholm Avenue in Walkerburn.

Neil Brown pleaded guilty to committing those offences on May 11 after taking the keys for the van from an address in Tweedholm Avenue in Walkerburn.

After crashing through a stone wall on the A72 Hamilton-Galashiels road, he was found to have an alcohol reading of 53 microgrammes, the legal limit being 22, Selkirk Sheriff Court heard.

He also admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner and making threats to police officers in Walkerburn on April 5 and possession of a knuckleduster in Overhaugh Street in Galashiels on October 16.

Defence lawyer Ed Hulme said Brown, of Peebles, had “significant mental health problems”.

Besides being banned from driving for three years, Brown was given a 12-month community payback order with supervision.
