As part of this enquiry, police are still keen to trace any witnesses.

Inspector Bryan Burns, of Galashiels Police Station, said: “Thanks to the swift actions of our officers, this man was quickly arrested.

“However we’re keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, particularly an elderly woman who may have come into contact with the man in Langlee Drive.

“She’s believed to be in her mid 70s, with short silver/grey hair, wearing a light quilted jacket, holding a walking stick and walking a white and tan coloured dog.”
