Man arrested for bogus workmen offences

A man has been arrested for bogus workmen offences following the theft of money from an elderly couple in Hawick.

The victims aged 93 and 84 reported a three-figure sum of cash had been stolen after allowing a man entry to their home in Langlands while he undertook gardening work throughout December.

As a result of local police inquiries a 28-year-old man was detained on Tuesday, December 22 and subsequently charged. He was due to appear in court today (Wednesday, December 23).

Inspector Carol Wood from Hawick Police Station said: “We are committed to identifying those responsible for preying on vulnerable members of our community and bringing them to justice.

“The public can assist us in our efforts to tackle bogus workmen offences by reporting any suspicious activity around the homes of family, friends or neighbours.

“In addition, homeowners are also asked to only utilise companies or individuals they know and trust to carry out work on their properties and never allow anyone access to your home if you are not entirely satisfied as to their identity.”
