Jedburgh 36-year-old banned from road for dangerous driving on A68 near Soutra

A woman has been banned from the road for a year for dangerous driving.

Miriam Duffy, 36, of Athol Court in Jedburgh, pleaded guilty to committing that offence on the A68 between Soutra and Lauder on June 21 last year.

She admitted hitting a verge and driving in the opposite carriageway and into the path of another vehicle.

Procurator fiscal Finlay Matheson told Jedburgh Sheriff Court a couple following her red Honda were so concerned about the way it was being driven that they phoned the police, and it was later tracked down to the forecourt of the petrol station in Lauder.

Defence lawyer Mat Patrick said his client had been driving back from Edinburgh and had not slept due to suffering from insomnia.

He added: “She accepts she was in no fit state to drive and should not have been.”

Duffy was banned for a year and ordered to resit her driving test, as well as being fined £300.

Sheriff Peter Paterson expressed concern at the reason she gave for her offence, pointing out that anything could happen if a person falls asleep at the wheel.

He added that she should take medical advice before driving again.
