Wayne Stilwell even sent her a letter from prison via a third party and ignored court orders requiring him to leave the woman alone.

He pleaded guilty to offences committed on June 18 and September 14 after being spotted in her company at three hotels in Melrose on September 27 last year.

Stilwell was already serving a prison sentence for previous offences involving the woman, described in court as vulnerable, when he admitted new charges on indictment.

Defence lawyer Mat Patrick said Stilwell now accepts the pair’s relationship is over and has no desire to contact her again.

Sheriff Peter Paterson said Stilwell, giving an address in Galashiels, had displayed a “controlling nature” with his offending.

Mr Paterson imposed a 16-month jail sentence backdated to September 30 and issued a five-year non-harassment order intended to prevent Stilwell from having any further contact with the woman.
