Conmen in hotel braid attempts

A warning has been issued by police to hotels and B&B operators in the Borders about an ongoing threat from conmen.

A hotel in Kelso received a booking from a man with a Nigerian accent saying he had pre-paid £2,800 into their bank account, but now wanted to reduce the length of his stay and asked for a refund of £2,000.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “The money was initially paid into the hotel’s bank account, but was not cleared and any refund made by the hotel would have resulted in a £2,000 fraudulent loss to the hotel.”

A similar incident happened in Peebles.

The spokesman stressed: “Our advice is always to check with your bank to confirm cleared funds in relation to bookings and to be extremely wary of requests of this type.”
