Neville Storer, 71, of Highridgehall Farm Cottages, east of Ednam, near Kelso, pleaded guilty to driving with a breath-alcohol reading of 98 microgrammes, the legal limit being 22, on the A699 Selkirk-Kelso road at Maxton on January 24.

Depute fiscal Anna Robertson said police officers stopped his vehicle at about 10.40pm because of the way it was being driven.

His lawyer explained that Storer had been driving for 53 years and was embarrassed to be in court for the offence.

The lawyer said his client, an artist, had consumed a quantity of alcohol while working that day and then made the “foolish decision” to drive to Tweedbank to pick up his partner.

Imposing a fine of £300 in addition to his disqualification from driving, sheriff Peter Paterson said he was sure Storer now appreciated the stupidity of his actions.
