Jacqueline Hogg, of Ramsay Road in Hawick, pleaded guilty to committing those offences on August 28.

Fiona Hamilton, prosecuting, told Jedburgh Sheriff Court the incident started at about 1.50pm when the accused approached her first victim and made a remark to her.

She said: “The woman got to the east end of High Street and met a friend, and they were approached by the accused again.

“She made references about something to do with them when they were at school.

“The accused pulled the woman’s hair and kicked her on the left thigh, creating a small bruise.

“She then started pulling the other woman’s hair.

“By this point, others had intervened, and there were no further injuries.”

Hogg is said to have told police the background to the incident was something she claimed had happened to her mother-in-law.

However, defence lawyer Ross Dow said the incident was in fact motivated by Hogg’s daughter allegedly having been bullied by the first victim back in the 1990s.

Sheriff Donald Ferguson told Hogg: “It was totally inappropriate to act in this way.”

Hogg was fined £75 for each of the assaults and ordered to pay £50 compensation to both women, meaning she will have to pay a total of £250 at the rate of £25 a month.
