AN organisation which helps children from around the Chernobyl plant hopes Borderers will open their homes to the youngsters.
The Scottish Borders Link of Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline are appealing for parents to host a visit from the Belarus children next year.
The charity commemorated the 25th anniversary of the disaster in April this year with a series of events in the Borders.
But it was unable to bring any children over to Scotland this summer.
It is estimated that by just spending a month in a clean environment such as the Borders it increases the life expectancy of youngsters living in the contaminated area from the nuclear power station explosion by two years.
Borders link secretary Sarah Barton said: ”We are hopeful that enough host families will come forward to make a visit in 2012 a possibility.
“A meeting is arranged for Monday September 5 at 7.30pm at the Kingsknowes Hotel in Galashiels and everyone is welcome to come along to find out what we do and get involved.”
