Cathy set for 27 mile charity bike ride - from her bed!

Staff and patients in the Borders Dialysis Unit recently read news of the plight of fellow kidney patients on the Isle of Bute.

Islanders with chronic kidney failure and requiring life-saving haemodialysis treatment currently have a gruelling journey via ferry to hospital in Glasgow or Greenock three times a week. Last year, with help from the Scottish Kidney Federation, they started a campaign to raise funds for their own dialysis unit.

This week Borders dialysis patient Cathy Taylor is on a sponsored cycle with a difference to help raise funds. Rather than cycling on the road, Cathy is pedalling while hooked up to her dialysis machine in the hospital.

Using a bike that attaches to the end of her dialysis chair, she aims to cover a distance of 27 miles, the equivalent of a circuit of the island of Bute. Cathy said: “We know how stressful and tiring transport can be, particularly in bad weather, and we wanted to offer our support to help them get their own unit.”

On March 24 there will also be an Easter cake, candy and craft stall on the ground floor of the BGH from 10am-4pm.
