At St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 78 clean cattle, 50 OTM cattle, 2,571 prime lambs and 512 ewes.

Bullocks (36) averaged 172.3p per kg (+0.3p on the week) and sold to 1.98p from Bee Edge, gross £1181 from Saughland.

Heifers (42) averaged 173p per kg (-5.8p on the week) and sold to 199p from Humebyres, gross £1183 from Upper Nisbet.

The 50 beef type OTM cattle averaged 114.1p per kg and sold to 147p, gross £1073 from Coxydene.

The 2,571 prime lambs averaged 192.9p per kg (+8p on the week) and sold to £100 a head from Mr J Grieve, Lee, and 214.5p per kg from DE and J Birkett, Hexpath.

The 512 ewes averaged £61.88 (+£5.09 on the week) and sold to £90 from BQ Farming Partnership Ltd Carterhaugh.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 21 prime cattle, six over 30 month cattle, 4,577 prime lambs and 4,621 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last week.

A small show of prime cattle due to the weather was met by an outstanding trade.

A grand show of 4,577 prime lambs was forward, selling to the usual ring of buyers and enjoying a very festive trade with the best average of the week at 190.3p per kilo (193.7p per kilo SQQ).

A highlight of this late festive sale was a terrific consignment of 1,250 head from Kintyre and Mid Argyll who saw an exceptional trade.

The sale was topped at 228p per kilo for Beltex from Copperthorns, with a top per head of £111.50 for Texels from Aldermanseat.
