At their weekly Primestock sale last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 992 hoggs and 286 ewes.

Numbers holding and all classes significantly dearer on the week, more sheep required for good ring of buyers.

At their weekly Primestock sale on Monday, John Swan Ltd sold 91 clean cattle, five OTM cattle, 47 beef cows, six dairy OTM, 1,580 old season lambs and 723 ewes.

Bullocks averaged 218.5p per kg and sold to 239p (+0.6p on week), heifers averaged 217.7p per kg and sold to 250p (-4.5p on week). Young bulls averaged 205.8p and sold to 216p (n/c on week), OTM cattle averaged 179.8p and sold to 195p (-1.2p on the week), beef type cows averaged 125.2p per kg and sold to 175p (-1.8p on the week) and dairy type OTM averaged 101.4p per kg and sold to 117 (n/c on week).

Old season lambs averaged 200p per kg (+9p on the week) £85.86 per head and sold to £113, top price 248p per kg for Beltex. Ewes averaged £82.91, and sold to £133 for Texel, heavy ewes averaged £87.49, light ewes sold to £75 for BF and averaged £53.45.

Border Livestock Exchange Ltd to week ending Friday January 16 2015 sold 194 Prime Cattle including 62 Cows; 2,019 Prime Sheep including 314 Ewes. 142 Store and Breeding Cattle also 260 Breeding Sheep.

Cattle trade was firmer on the week with Cast Cows particularly good to sell. Young Cattle sold to 395p per kg for an Aberdeen Angus Cross Heifer from Fenwick Steads, Belford to Well Hung & Tender, Berwick upon Tweed. OTM Cattle sold to 300p per kg and £1,263 for an Aberdeen Angus Cross from West Kyloe, Beal. Limousin Crosses sold to £1,206 from Heavyside, Kelso. Another tremendous consignment of 8 Pedigree Cows from Bowsden Moor, Berwick upon Tweed sold to a top of £1,329 for a Charolais and 285p per kg for a 12 year old Belgian Blue. Overall average was a cracking £1,254 per head.

Lambs were again firmer on the week with export weights selling to £88.20 Ex Hedgeley Farm, Wooler and 420p per kg for Romney Lambs Ex Hallrule Farms, Bonchester Bridge. Hawick.

Breeding Ewes sold to £140 for regular aged Mules due March. Breeding Cattle sold well to £1400 for 5th Calving Aberdeen Angus Cross Cows. Luing Cross Heifers to £800.


The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward five prime cattle, 10 over 30 month cattle, 5,347 prime hoggs and 4,221 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Prime cattle were very very short of requirements with all classes a shade dearer and buyers going home short of requirements. Top price of 227.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by W. and W. Faulder, Houghton House. OTMS cattle were a poorer show, selling at higher rates. Top of 173.5p (£1,023) for a Luing from The Lamperts.

A larger show of 5,347 prime hoggs forward to a full ring of buyers all keen for sheep again. All classes of hoggs were dearer on the week with 34-42kilo export hoggs in demand.
