John Swan suckled calf sale at Wooler ''Champion Any Breed was a BRB.x Steers from H N Howard, Chillingham Home Farm weighing 460kg and selling at �1200


At their Annual Show and Sale of Suckled Calves, John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 689 head.

The Show was kindly sponsored by Barclays Bank represented by Nick Sheffer and Ann Bennett and expertly judged by John Thompson, Smallburn Farm, Longhorsley who awarded the Charolais Championship to first time winners Messrs R. and R.W. Gray, Great Ryle, with a Charolais Steer weighing 550kg and selling at £1250 to Messrs S. and J. Allen, Longnewton, St Boswells.

Champion any other breed was a BRB.x Steer from H.N. Howard and Son, Chillingham Home Farm, for the second year running, weighing 460kg and selling at £1200 to the judge John Thompson.

A quality show of cattle presented to a full ring of buyers trade as predicted earlier in the year but all classes in keen demand.

At their weekly primsetock sale John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 827 lambs and 162 ewes and rams.

Lamb numbers tighter due to calf sale week, all in spec types well dearer, heavies similar.

More quality prime cattle on offer this week with better sorts a shade sharper. Top price to 225.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by D.J. Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage.
