At their weekly sale of primestock last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 1,409 lambs and 247 ewes and rams.

At their weekly sale of primestock on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 88 clean cattle, 51 OTM cattle, 20,29 new season lambs and 937 ewes.

Bullocks (43) averaged 217.5p per kg and sold to 241p (+8.1p on week), heifers (44) averaged 217p per kg and sold to 246p (n/c on week), one young bull sold to 210p and 51 beef type OTM cattle averaged 127.6p per kg and sold to 205p (+8.2p on the week).

New season lambs averaged 1.60p per kg (-3p on the week) and sold to £90, top price 183p per kg for Beltex.x. Ewes averaged £61.15, and sold to £89 for Texel. Heavy ewes averaged £64.55, light ewes sold to £79 for Lleyn and averaged £55.64.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 22 prime cattle, one young bull, 14 over 30 month cattle, 4,917 prime lambs and 6,250 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Prime cattle took a big lift with trade the dearest for sometime with ten bidders in attendance all left short of requirements many more needed for the every growing demand. Top price to 224.5p twice for Limousin bullocks from D.J. Garthwaite and Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage, and A. and W.J. Taylor and Son, Dashwellgreen. Limousin heifers sold to 223.5p from W. and W. Faulder, Houghton House.

A mixed show of cast cows with trade a shade sharper and again many more required and would sell to advantage. Top price 136.5p (£982.80) for a Belgian Blue cow from G. Mitchinson and Sons, High Greenhill.

A much larger show of 4,917 prime lambs were forward to the usual ringside of buyers, with all buyers keen for lambs especially well fleshed sorts. Top was £97 for Texel lambs from Messrs Byers, Cubby Hill, and 217p per kilo also for Texels from A.R Bell, Kirkton.

Light lambs sold to a top of £70 for Texels from Messrs T. Hutton, The How.

Prime ewes and rams were a larger show of 6,250 with all classes again very dear with heavy well fleshed ewes short of buyers requirements. Top price was £162 for Charollais rams from Drumlister.
