At their weekly Primestock sale last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 1,042 spring lambs, 88 hoggs and 95 ewes.

Strong show of spring lambs, with increased numbers achieving similar returns.

John Swan Ltd sold 85 clean cattle, 40 OTM cattle, 1374 new season lambs, 176 old season lambs and 461 ewes .

Bullocks (38) averaged p per kg and sold to 255p (-4.7p on week)

Heifers (46) averaged 239p per kg and sold to 270p (+4.0p on week).

One young bull averaged 218p per kg and sold to 218p (n/c on week), 40 beef type OTM cattle averaged 153.4p per kg and sold to 224p (-1.3p on the week).

New season lambs averaged 2131.4p per kg (-9p on week) and sold to £118.

Old season SQQ lambs averaged 164.4p and sold to £90.

Ewes averaged £55.25 and sold to £109 for ewes & £117 for tups.

Heavy ewes £72.78, light ewes £39.68.


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC held their Fortnightly Sale of Store & Breeding Cattle at Longtown on Tuesday June 25.

Some better quality store cattle on offer with a much sharper trade than previous weeks and vendors going home happy. The sale was topped at £1,060 for a 12 month old Limousin heifer shown by D.H. & J.M. Murray, The Throp.



Limousin - £900 High Parkfoot and Longrow, £860 Gibstown, £825 Hightown and Broadhaugh, £805 Hightown, £800 Longrow and D’Mainholm.

Charolais - £890 (x2) Underwoodhouse, £865 Nether Albie, £755 (x2) Underwoodhouse.

Blue Grey - £800 (x2), £790 (x2), £725 (x2) Whitbysteads.

Shorthorn - £795 Whitbysteads.

Aberdeen Angus - £790 Longrow.


Limousin - £1,060, £1,010 The Throp, £1,005 (x2) Winterhope, £970 (x2) Broadhaugh, £920 (x2) The Throp, £915 (x3) Streethead.

A shortage of breeders with all classes selling to recent rates. A Limousin heifer with Angus heifer calf topped the sale at £1,650 from Millantae Farms. Bulling heifers sold to £1,190 (x2) for Limousin shown by W.T. Bendle & Son, The Nook.

Border Livestock Exchange

2013 sold 65 Prime Cattle including 33 Cows; 3,019 Prime Lambs including 214 Ewes and 29 Store Cattle. More lambs became available and proved easy to sell at the current improved trade. Hoggs and cull ewes were also easier to sell. Texel Cross Lambs sold to £107.10 for 21kg as did Suffolk Crosses and Beltexs, which achieved 510p per kilo. Heavy Lambs 22kg sold to £109.80 with light Lambs 8-12kgs selling to 465p per kg.

Prime Cattle numbers continued to be short of requirements with the firm trade being easily sustained. Aberdeen Angus Crosses sold to 454p per kg to Well Hung & Tender, Berwick upon Tweed. Simmental Crosses sold to 413p per kg with Limousin Young Bulls selling to 410p per kg and £1,555. Pure Limousin Cows sold to £1,741 and a cull Angus bull made £1,850.
