AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 59 clean cattle, 65 OTM cattle, 2,093 spring lambs and 588 ewes.

Bullocks (22) averaged 221p per kg (+10.0p on the week). Heifers (30) averaged 217p per kg (+1.9p on the week). Seven young bulls averaged 184p per kg (n/c on the week) and 65 beef type OTM cattle averaged 141.6p per kg (+1.9p on the week).

The 2,093 spring lambs averaged 183.4p per kg (-3.9p on the week) and 588 ewes averaged £64.32 (-4.72 on the week).

Quality butchers cattle were very scarce with prices ranging from 2.30/2.40p per kg.

THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 52 prime cattle, 14 young bulls, 39 over 30 month cattle, 5,326 prime lambs and 6,899 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A smaller plainer show of prime cattle saw quality sorts remain in demand. Top price to 220.5p for a Limousin bullock shown by A. and W.J. Taylor and Son, Dashwell Green and purchased by W. Kirkup and Sons, Butchers, Longtown. Limousin heifers sold to 215.5p (three times) firstly from J. and N. Blaylock and Son, Hallburn and the others both from D.J. Garthwaite and Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage.

A plainer show of prime bulls met a similar trade and topped at 211.5p for a Limousin from J. Robison and Son, Oakwoodhill. Top gross was £2,023.43 for a Charolais shown by Gretna House Farms.

A larger show of 1,424 lightweight lambs saw smaller Swaledale and English Mule lambs little more than store price if lacking flesh. Another large entry of 6,899 cast ewes and rams attracted the usual ring of buyers with trade being £4 to £6 back on the week.
