AT their weekly Primestock Sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 14 new season lambs, 382 hoggs and 167 ewes. After a dismal start to the week vendors received rates above expectations.

AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 114 clean cattle, 71 OTM cattle, 706 old season lambs, 46 spring lambs and 452 ewes.

Bullocks (52) averaged 209.5p per kg (-1.3p on the week). Heifers (53) averaged 206.8p per kg (+0.8p on the week). Young bulls (9) averaged 198p per kg (+1.0p on the week) and 71 beef type OTM cattle averaged 152.2p per kg (+0.2 on the week).

Spring lambs (46) averaged 219.3p (+6.8p on the week). Old season lambs (706) averaged 174p per k, (-13.1p on the week) (47kg average weight), including 224 38-42kgs averaging 204.5p. Ewes (452) averaged £81.95 (-£1.25 on the week).

DURING last week Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 149 prime cattle including 44 cows, 247 prime sheep including 79 new season lambs and 146 store cattle.

A fantastic home bred Aberdeen Angus cross steer sold to 365p per kg and £1,541 from Swinhoe Farm, Belford. Aberdeen Angus cross heifers from Stagehall, Stow, and Whitmuirhaugh, Kelso, sold 370p per kg and £1,258. Limousin cross young bulls from Whitmuirhaugh, Kelso, sold to 350p per kg and £1,354 to average £1,314. Steers from Hallrule, Bonchester Bridge, sold to 361p per kg and £1,388. Stabiliser cross cows from Lilburn Estate, Wooler, sold to £1,382 and 310p per kg. Limousin cross heifers from Shidlaw, Cornhill, sold to 350p per kg and cows to £1,249. Aberdeen Angus cross cows from Upper Samieston, Jedburgh, and Graden, Kelso, sold to 300p per kg. Dairy young bulls to 335p per kg Haugh Head, Wooler, and £1,007 Middle Moor, Alnwick.

New season lambs sold to 500p per kg and £133 per head from Eastfield of Lempitlaw, Kelso, with Texel crosses from Easington Grange, Belford, reaching £117.

Organic hoggs from Tullochallum, Keith, sold to 500p per kg and £107.10 per head for Suffolk cross Shetland.

Store cattle continue to sell well with numbers sold well up on last year’s sales. Limousin cross heifers to £895. Limousin x bullocks to £1,080 and Charolais cross heifers to £1,020.
