THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 69 prime cattle, five young bulls, 25 over 30 month cattle, 4,613 prime lambs and 5,337 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Yet again a big show of 64 prime cattle saw trade sharper on the week with more grass fed cattle on offer. Limousin heifers to 205.5p from Messrs Ferguson, Sandbed, with Limousin bullocks to 205.5p, 203.5p (x2), 201.5p from A. and W.J. Taylor and Son, Dashwellgreen. Mr Taylor sold a run of seven bullocks to average 199.8p.

Principal prices per head: Bullocks, Limousin – £1,343 Dashwell Green, £1,318 Newtown, £1,302, £1,277, £1,233, £1,222 Dashwellgreen. Charolais – £1,326, £1,225 Nether Onsett.

Heifers, Limousin - £1,119, £1,081 Sandbed.

Bulls met a flying trade and more numbers required.

A plain show of over 30 month cattle saw trade similar on the week. Limousin cows to 133.5p, 131.5p from Mr W. Hodgson, Blindhillbush. Black and White cows to 131.5p from T.B. Imrie, Harelawhole.

Principal prices per kilo, Cows: Limousin – 133.5p, 131.5p, 123.5p Blindhillbush. Friesian – 131.5p Harelawhole, 120.5p Evertown, 115.5p Rowanburnfoot, 113.5p Harelawhole. Angus – 114.5p Rowanburnfoot.

A larger show of 4,613 prime lambs levelled at 197.1p per kilo, well ahead of most centres this week.

Lambs 25-32 kilos averaged 206p and lambs 32-39 kilos averaged 200p, once lambs were getting over 44 kilos up to 50 kilos they were not worth a whole lot more and harder to cash.

Handyweight lambs 34-38 kilos seem to be in much demand and short of requirements.

The sale was topped at 219p per kilo for Dutch Texels from Messrs Sowerby Amoshill, with a top per head of £98.50 for Suffolks from Barnglies and Kilnfordcroft, others £91 Barnglies; Bleu d’Maine £97.50, £94.80 Middle Farm; Texel £96.80 Kilnfordcroft, £95.50 Low Longthwaite, £94.50 Pirntaton; Charollais £92.50 Pates Hill.
