Bullocks (99) averaged 183.7p per kg (-2.8p on the week) and sold to 208p from Bee Edge, gross £1402 from Longnewton. Heifers (58) averaged 182.5p per kg (-0.5p on the week) and sold to 204p from Corsbie, gross £1217 from Upper Nisbet. The 13 young bulls averaged 174p per kg, (-2.7p on the week) and sold to 193p from Corsbie, gross £1273 from Corsbie. The 86 beef type over 30 month cattle averaged 127.1p per kg and sold to 166p from Bedrule, gross £1312 from Marigold.

The 256 spring lambs averaged 278.9p per kg, £120.59 and sold to £136 a head from R Neill and Son, Thornington, and 298.8p per kg from M/s W Fleming and Sons, Lochside.

The 599 prime hoggs averaged 211.1p per kg and sold to £135.50 a head from N Donaldson, 6 Edgar Road, Westruther, and 254.4p per kg from M/s J.S Baird and Son.

The 311 ewes averaged £78.69 and sold to £134 from John Harrison, 25 Brunt Court, Dunbar.

Border Livestock Exchange week ending Friday 13th May sold 146 prime cattle including 52 cows, 314 prime sheep including 186 cast ewes and 142 store cattle.

Prime cattle continue to be short of requirements with AA Cross heifers from Bonjedward Mill, Jedburgh selling to 328p per kg. 12 Continental cross bullocks from Cairndinnis Farm, Haddington sold to 317p per kg and averaged £1,192 per head. Home bred bullocks from Butchercote, St Boswells also realised 317p. Dairy bred young bulls reached 300p per kg for Holstein Crosses from Whitlawside, Canonbie.

New season lambs are also in short supply with record prices weekly. Continental crosses from Lamberton sold to 580p per kg and £121.80, Texel crosses from Whitehaugh Farm, Hawick sold to 570p per kg and £119.70 per head.

Store cattle were the dearest price so far with Limousin crosses selling to 220p per kg bulk weighed £840 for nine-month-old bullocks and heifers. Limousin cross bulling heifers to £975 with B Blue to £1,060. Cows and calves to £1,550 for 4th/5th calvers.


At their fortnightly Store Sale held at Wooler last Tuesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 62 store cattle.

On the second week in May, C and D Mart continued to surprise with numbers of hoggs with 5,000 head again being forward. Good fleshed hoggs easily upheld recent high rates with a sale average of 238.9p per kilo. Many best hoggs regularly sold between 250p and 270p per kilo.
