At St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 137 clean cattle, 123 OTM cattle, 2,838 prime hoggs and 982 ewes.

Bullocks (48) averaged 169.2p per kg (+2.2p on the week) and sold to 200p from Humebyres, gross £1269 from Lurdenlaw. Heifers (73) averaged 172.5p per kg (+2.5p on the week) and sold to 202p from Bee Edge, gross £1326 from Inland Pastures.

The 16 young bulls averaged 146.6p per kg, -3.7p on the week, and sold to 161p from Tandlaw, gross £1036 from Philiphaugh. The 123 beef type OTM cattle averaged 104.1p per kg and sold to 150p from Humbie Mill, gross £1225 from Fans.

The 2,838 prime hoggs averaged 178p per kg (-1.8p on the week) and sold to £92 a head for Texels from JE Runciman, St Leonards, Lauder, and 200.5p per kg for a pen of Texels from The Firm of Nixon and Co. Oakwood, Selkirk.

The 982 ewes averaged £60.24 (+£0.56 on the week) and sold to £118 for Texels from The Campbell Partnership, Burnhouse Mains.

Border Livestock Exchange Ltd to week ending Friday January 28 sold 186 prime cattle including 119 cast cows and bulls, 1492 prime lambs including 147 ewes and 82 store cattle.

Cattle trade was easier on the week for clean cattle. Cast cows continue to sell exceptionally well. Prime cattle were topped by Lochside Farm, Yetholm for Limousin cross bullocks selling to 295p per kg and £1114 per head. Cast cows from Easington Grange, Belford sold to £1018 and 235p per kg. Cast Limousin bulls sold to 200p per kg and £1196 per head from Brackenside Farm, Bowsden, Berwick upon Tweed.

Prime lambs sold well at the end of the week having been slow at the beginning of the week. Suffolk and Tex x lambs sold to 400p from Roddam Estate, Wooler and Longwitton Farm, Morpeth. Romney cross lambs from Hallrule Farm, Bonchester Bridge sold to 390p per kg and £81.60. Organic lambs sold to £92.40, East Mains.

Store cattle – Spring-born Charolais cross bullocks to 185p per kg and £650 per head. AA x to bullocks £820 for 18-20 moths old.


At their weekly Primestock Sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 949 hoggs and 331 ewes.

Hoggs keenly bid for showing marked improvement from early week markets. Overall average 175.3p per kilo, (-7.7p on the week).

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 52 prime cattle, 44 over 30 month cattle, 4,353 prime hoggs and 5,138 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Prime cattle saw trade slightly easier on the week, following the national trend. Top price 183.5p for Limousin heifers from Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn and purchased by W Kirkup and Sons, Butchers, Longtown.

Others to 175.5p Toppin Castle, 173.5p Englishtown, 170.5p Dashwellgreen, 165.5p Houghton House and Brydekirk Mains; Charolais 165.5p Hallburn; British Blue 175.5p Houghton House, 167.5p Dashwellgreen. OTMS met a firmer trade with a better show of fleshed cows. Top price to 127.5p for Limousin cows from A and K McKinlay, Balure. Other Limousin 115.5p Blindhillbush, 106.5p Whamtown. A similar show of hoggs were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Export hoggs (36-42kg) and lightweight hoggs were easily sold and short of buyers requirements. Hoggs 44kg – 49kg proved harder to cash but 50kg plus hoggs were short of requirements.

The overall sale average was 183.9p with the SQQ (32-45kg) averaging 187.6p. The sale topped at £108.50 for Texels from AR Bell, Kirkton and to 236p for Beltex from S Frizell, Thorneylands.
