Herds heading for Lauder hotel

STARTER farmers have the rare chance to rent a farm from the Duke of Buccleuch.

Buccleuch Estates is aiming the let of the upland farm Fenwick near Hawick specifically at new entrants to the industry.

Bowhill Estate manager Andrew Brough said: “We are eager to provide a platform for somebody keen to enter the farming industry who has never had the opportunity.”

The let would be for five years and would probably be extended to 10 only, after which the estate will offer the small farm to another person new to farming.

The estate hopes it will come with an environmental management scheme in place through the Scottish Rural Development Programme which would give the tenant with up to £5,000 a year.

Viewing will take place on the first two Saturdays in February.
